Quality Settings
This category is crucial and has a direct impact on the visual quality of the impostor, as it provides full control over the baking topology. Pair it with the Information Panel, which provides real-time visualization for fast, accurate control over the baking topology.
Texture Size
Color, Normal and Metallic maps are stored in square power-of-two atlases. This field controls the resolution of these atlases, from 128×128 to 4096×4096. The Estimated total size label reports the size of the whole impostor prefab after baking (with DXT compression).
Sphere Type
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| UV sphere | The default choice. Based on a fixed number of longitude and latitude samples. Coverage is denser at the poles. A solid choice in many use cases, with more versatility for partial-sphere baking. |
| Pseudo-Fibonacci sphere | Experimental. Provides homogeneous coverage. Not compatible with latitude interpolation in the impostor shader. Despite being homogeneous, the output looks smooth near the equator, with more noticeable snaps or blur around the poles. Full-sphere baking only. |
Sample settings (UV sphere)
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Longitude Samples | Number of longitudinal samples. Higher is better for smooth horizontal rotation, at the cost of a higher POV count and therefore lower resolution per POV in the atlas. All samples are equally spread around 360°. |
| Latitude Samples | Half the number of latitudinal samples (equator excluded). A value of 0 bakes only around the equator; 1 bakes one extra sample on each side of the equator, and so on. Higher is better for smooth vertical rotation, at the cost of a higher POV count and lower resolution per POV. |
| Latitude Offset | Shifts the equator sample. Useful for partial spheres. |
| Latitude Step | Angular offset between two latitudinal samples. A small value increases vertical-rotation smoothness but may limit the global latitudinal range. |
Density (Pseudo-Fibonacci sphere)
Controls the density of the sphere. Higher is better for smooth rotation in any direction, at the cost of a higher POV count and therefore lower resolution per POV in the atlas.
Lighting Method
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Surface Estimation | Computes dedicated normal and metallic map atlases for physically correct light reflections on the impostor. The recommended method. The baked impostor uses a lit surface shader. |
| Use Scene Sun Source | Adds the sun source of the open scene to the baking context. Can give better results on single-lit scenes, especially with intricate smoothness/occlusion materials. Uses significantly less memory per impostor. The baked impostor uses an unlit shader. |
Presets
You can add and load presets with the dedicated buttons — an extra degree of freedom to match your workflow. A few relevant presets are included, such as 1-POV billboard and various hemispheres. Importing a preset and modifying values won't modify the preset unless you explicitly export and replace it.
